Nestled in the heart of Long Island, the Long Island Innovation Park at Hauppauge stands as a testament to the region’s dynamic business environment and entrepreneurial spirit. It holds the distinction of being the second largest industrial park in the United States, an achievement that remains surprisingly unknown even among many Long Islanders. While Silicon Valley often dominates headlines, the Innovation Park represents a different kind of success: one built on industrial diversity, local innovation, and a strong, resilient business community. It drives economic impact at a massive scale, supports thousands of jobs, and anchors one of the most important commercial hubs on the East Coast. Serving businesses across both Suffolk and Nassau counties.
Spanning more than 1,400 acres, the Long Island Innovation Park is home to approximately 1,400 companies and provides employment for roughly 55,000 people. Often, people drive by, or even through, the park without realizing its sheer size or the incredible diversity of businesses operating within it. Seemingly hidden behind the park’s unassuming footprint is a remarkable range of industries. From advanced manufacturing and biotechnology to information technology, aerospace, healthcare, and professional services, the breadth of industries represented here is impressive. This diversity gives the park a unique resilience and a broader economic footprint, very different from more specialized regions like Silicon Valley. Many of the companies based here contribute not just to the local economy but to national and global markets. And while Long Island businesses are often overshadowed by the density of enterprises in nearby New York City, the Innovation Park continues to prove that world-class business happens right here in Hauppauge.
In a recent Economic Impact Study conducted in collaboration with a task force of business owners, the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency (IDA), and the Stony Brook University College of Business, the Long Island Innovation Park’s contribution to the region, and the state, came into focus.
Though the park physically occupies just 0.0002% of New York State’s 54,556 square miles, its sales volume accounts for an impressive 1.35% of the state’s gross product — totaling over $13.4 billion in annual sales.
Locally, the park generates more than $19 million in annual tax revenue for the Town of Smithtown and contributes approximately $64.5 million in property taxes and payroll taxes — leaving an estimated $2.09 billion circulating in the local economy.
The park’s total combined payroll reaches nearly $2.9 billion, with over $806 million paid in income taxes. These numbers highlight just how critical the Innovation Park is to both the Long Island economy and the broader New York State economic landscape.
