The lineage behind the framework, and why a staged model beats a to-do list.
The AI Maturity Curve is Flexible IT's framework for measuring how ready a business is to adopt AI, and for building a clear roadmap from where it stands today to where it needs to be.
We built it on decades of proven thinking about organizational maturity. The Capability Maturity Model (CMM), developed at Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute in 1986, established that any organizational capability evolves through the same five stages, from ad-hoc to continuously optimized. That thinking has since been applied to cybersecurity, data, digital transformation, and professional services. Flexible IT's AI Maturity Curve is the first framework to apply it directly to AI adoption for small and mid-sized businesses.
Roughly 80% of businesses are in the first three levels of maturity across any given capability. AI is no exception — and in most cases, businesses sit further to the left on the AI curve than they do on other capabilities. This is not a failing. It is where the opportunity lives.
Most AI adoption guides read like a to-do list. Buy licenses. Write a policy. Train your team. The problem is that those tasks mean completely different things depending on where you are starting from. A maturity curve changes the conversation from "what should we do?" to "where are we, and what is the next level?" The answer to the first question is universal. The answer to the second is specific to your business.
