As we wrap up the roller season and begin preparing for ice, it’s hard not to feel proud of how far the Flexible Arena has come in such a short time. What started as a simple idea, a place for local teams to play, practice, and connect, has turned into a community hub for all forms of hockey: roller, dek, and ball.
This past season, we hosted our first-ever Roller Tournament, bringing together 10 teams from across the tri-state area. To our surprise and excitement, the skill level was incredible. Some of the best roller hockey players on Long Island, and even a few nationally ranked players, laced up right here in Hauppauge. The competition was intense, but the sportsmanship, camaraderie, and energy were even better.
We played by our own Flexible Arena rules: no refs, no penalties, and a running clock. And honestly, we had a blast. It was pure, unfiltered hockey the way it’s meant to be — competitive, fast-paced, and fun. The kind of day that reminded us why we built this place in the first place — to give people who love the game a place to play it, free of barriers.
Outside of the tournament, we were able to open the rink to a mix of ice, roller, dek, and ball hockey teams for practices and scrimmages. Each group brought its own character and community, and seeing the space filled nearly every night was a clear sign that there’s real demand for more local hockey in every form.
That said, it’s worth remembering: we’re an ice rink first and foremost. That’s what we do, and it’s what we’ve always done. This was our first-ever roller hockey season, a creative way to keep the rink active during the warmer months and give players something new to enjoy before the ice goes back in.
It was a learning experience for us, and a successful one at that. We tried something different, brought people together, and proved there’s real demand for off-season hockey on Long Island. Now, with the roller season behind us, we’re ready to get back to what we do best — ice.
Over the next few weeks, the rink will transition from wheels to blades as we enter the winter ice season. We’re planning more tournaments, new events, and a brand-new Industrial Hockey League, a 3v3 format designed specifically for companies within the Hauppauge Industrial Park and local first responder teams. It’ll be fast, fun, competitive, and best of all, free to play. We’re opening the invitation to any company or department in the area that wants to join, lace up, and represent their team.
A registration form will be released soon for those interested in joining the Industrial League.
We’re often asked how people can give back to the Flexible Arena. While we don’t accept direct donations, we always encourage supporting the organizations we stand behind — groups doing meaningful work in our community. One we proudly support is Whip Pediatric Cancer, a cause that continues to inspire us and many families across Long Island.
Not every kid has the gift of being healthy or the ability to play sports and do the normal kid things we often take for granted. Whip Pediatric Cancer helps children facing unimaginable challenges find a sense of normalcy, joy, and fun in their lives, and that’s something we’ll always stand behind.
The Flexible Arena has always been about giving back, creating a space for the community to connect through sport. Whether it’s roller in the summer or ice in the winter, that mission doesn’t change. The surface might, but the goal stays the same.
Expect Ice at the Flexible Arena Starting November 17th 2025!
